Project AE86: Event Report

September 26th, 2006 - David Padron

The drift course at Willow Springs’ Walt James Oval is notoriously difficult for low powered cars and our stock-engine AE86 corolla is no exception. Knowing this definitely doesn’t get one in the proper frame of mind to drift the 3/8 Mile oval. During practice it was a struggle to find a line that would allow me to clear the long sweeper with enough speed to clip the inner apex. Inconsistant tire/wheel combinations didn’t help. But, I was convinced the line was there and that the car was capable.

The death of a bumper

During the last session of practice something worked. I managed to complete the course though, not exactly how I had wanted to. Unfortunately, practice for our group was at an end. The oval had been slick all day, and traction lessened while it cooled before qualifying. Finally, it was time to qualify, so I hit play on my Alex P. playlist and made my runs. You can see a video of my first run here. The run was good -minus my clipping a hay bail and spinning. Following that run I managed to put down two decent runs and ended up qualifying 16th.

Searching for that perfect line..

I wasn’t able to advance beyond the round of Top 16 but, I had a great time and I think the crowd enjoyed my runs.
