Drift Indy: Event Report

Whether or not the first event in the Drift Indy schedule would even take place was very much up in the air. The weather forecast, barring a freak mid-continental hurricane, likely could not have been any worse. Rain, snow and very cold. Having so much hinging on the success of our first event, the decision was made to press on and hold the event anyways. At 8:00 am 23 very hardcore drivers stood inside the ring of one very wet oval track and the drivers meeting began. The majority of drivers were representing the local Indiana scene, however drivers from as far as Missouri and Ohio made the journey bringing their experience in tow to help tear it up proper. The track proved very slick, yet manageable. Throughout the course of the day as rain continued to fall, pools of water began to form on the track, which were summarily dealt with by the Drift Indy staff, armed with the high-tech weaponry known as the “push broom.” However as the day went on and rain began to fall harder and harder, the idea of having a clear track soon became unrealistic and puddles of water began to form. This was little deterrence to the drivers and the event continued on strong. The driving of the day was all in all, impressive. The rain proved to be a challenge to all, yet the drivers all displayed a marked improvement between their first runs and those towards the end of the day. Despite the unpleasant conditions the event went off without a hitch and a good time, was had by all.
