After putting together some stellar runs in yesterdays Driver Search and today in D1 GP Qualifying, Stephan found the wall that so many have found before him this weekend at Irwindale Speedway.
Nobushige Kumakubo vs Calvin Wan
Near the end of the day on Friday at Irwindale during the seeded driver practice session several American and Japanese drivers were practicing tandem on the bank. Nobushige Kumakubo shows off his impressive tandem abilities as he follows Calvin Wan on the bank at Irwindale Speedway. Calvin is driving the RX-7 and Nobushige is in the Subaru Impreza. The D1 GP filming policy does not allow for me to have footage of his tandem runs other then practice, but if it is possible for you to get to an event where you can watch Nobushige run tandem, I recommend that you do so.

Taka Aono - D1 GP Drivers Search
Drift Day sponsored Taka Aono is a constant crowd favorite behind the wheel of this Toyota Corolla. In this video Taka is drifting the Irwindale oval during the drivers search portion of the D1GP “All Star” event. Taka qualified for the event and received his D1 License.

During the last run of the 2005 D1 GP Driver Search Tony Brakohiapa had the misfortune of facing off with some of Irwindale Speedway’s famous K-rail. Tony emerged from the accident shaken, but not seriously harmed.

Rhys Millen takes on his Father at Irwindale
Anyone familiar with drifting in the United States knows Rhys Millen and his famous Pontiac GTO. Rhys won the Formula D Championship in 2005, but this year he has to watch-out as the competition for D1GP at Irwindale just got a little bit tougher. New to the sport of drifting, but not to performance driving is his father Rod Millen. Rod Millen owns the Pikes Peak record for the fastest driving time up the mountain (10:04.06 set in 1994) and has a driving career spanning over 30 years. Rod Millen can be seen driving a rotary powered Mazda RX-8.
